Friday, September 6, 2024 - Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined Kenyans in mourning the 17 pupils who tragically lost their lives in a dormitory fire at Hillside Academy in Endarasha, Nyeri, on Thursday night. Fourteen other pupils were injured in the devastating inferno. In his statement, Uhuru Kenyatta expressed deep sorrow, describing the loss of these young lives, full of potential and hope for the future, as an indescribable pain. The ‘Son of Jomo’ expressed sympathy for the families who have lost their children and the broader school community. "The loss of young lives, full of potential and hope for the future, is a pain that cannot be fully described. "My heart goes out to the families who lost their children and the school community deeply affected by this tragedy of unimaginable magnitude. "May God give you the strength, comfort, and peace you need as you cope with this loss," Uhuru said. According to Nyeri County Commissioner Pius Murugu, the dorm that caught fire had 152 pupils. Murugu said the dormitory caught fire at about 3.00 am and that the wooden structures saw the fire spread fast despite the quick response of disaster management teams from the county government. "Most of the structures in this school are wooden which worsened the fire," he said. The county commissioner who is leading a multi-agency team that arrived at the school said the dead learners could not be saved. Friday, September 6, 2024 – Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos has been forced to cut short his trip to China, where he had accompanied President William Ruto, and return home urgently. This follows the fire tragedy at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County that has left 17 pupils dead. Ruto ordered Migos to fly back to Kenya and help get to the bottom of the matter. In the meantime, the Ministry of Education has already commenced a joint investigation with the Ministry of Interior on the root cause of the tragedy at Hillside Endarasha. In a statement, Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang revealed that Education CS Julius Migos is returning to join local teams and ensure the situation is addressed with utmost urgency. According to the PS, a multi-agency team was already on the ground leading in the management of the situation. Kipsang in his update disclosed that the Ministry of Education was also working with the Ministry of Health to ensure that all those injured during the tragedy get adequate medical attention. "In line with His Excellency President William Ruto's directive, the Ministry of Education is coordinating with security agencies to investigate the root cause of the incident at the school," Kipsang stated. While detailing the occurrence, the PS revealed that 17 pupils had so far been confirmed deceased while the 14, nursing critical injuries had been rushed to the nearest hospitals. Kipsang further noted that the school had an enrolment of 824 pupils out of which 402 were boys while 422 were girls. Of the total enrolment, 156 boys and 160 girls were boarders while the rest were day scholars.  According to Belio Kipsang, all the 156 boys boarders were accommodated in the ill-fated dormitory. He apologised to fans in a heartbreaking announcement he said "makes me feel like I've let everybody down." The gun-rights activist shared the news in a posthumous video on his channel titled, "I'm dead." "If you're watching me, I'm dead," the Oregon-based content creator told his 1.14 million subscribers. The six-minute clip from "beyond the grave," was filmed in December 2023, with his family publishing it following his death on Tuesday, September 3. Harrell made the announcement while sitting on a log in a forest, the very spot where he first told his subscribers about his diagnosis with Stage 2 pancreatic cancer. Initially, Harrell was optimistic, telling fans his cancer had been "caught early" and he would "be here for some time." But in his posthumous video, Harrell went on to detail how his health took a turn for the worse. "We did catch it early but not as early as I had thought," Harrell told fans. "It has spread faster than I thought it would. My time is drawing very short." Using crutches after fracturing his hip – an injury he revealed was triggered by his cancer after it spread to his bones and caused them to "crumble" – the YouTuber offered his "sincere apologies" to fans who would be shocked over his sudden death. "I had hoped that I would continue in this format for the next 10 or even 15 years," he said. Thursday, September 5, 2024 - A Texas woman has been formally indicted over the allegedly racially motivated attempted drowning of a three-year-old Palestinian-American girl. 42-year-old Elizabeth Wolf was arrested back in May after she tried to drown the little girl at an apartment complex swimming pool in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburb of Euless 'because she was Muslim'. The girl's six-year-old brother was also hurt in the incident. Three months after the incident, a Tarrant County grand jury has charged Wolf with attempted capital murder of a person under 10 years of age and intentionally causing bodily injury to a child. The indictment filed on August 15 also included a hate crime enhancement, according to court records that came to light on Tuesday. The enhancement may raise the severity of Wolf's sentence if she is found guilty. Investigators allege that Wolf, whose representative could not immediately be reached for comment, was drunk at the time of the attempted drowning. Wolf approached a hijab-wearing Muslim woman - identified as Mrs H - at the apartment complex pool in May, according to a police report. Officials said that Wolf began making racist comments and demanded to know where Mrs H's family was from and if the two children in the pool were hers. After a few minutes, she tried to drown the 3-year-old and attempted to grab the 6-year-old boy, the police report said. 'Wolf tried to grab (the mother's) six-year-old son but he pulled away from her grasp, which caused a scratch on his finger. 'The mother began helping her son when Wolf grabbed her three-year-old daughter and forced her underwater. The mother was able to pull her daughter from the water. 'Her daughter had been yelling for help and was coughing up water,' Euless police said. Mrs H was able to pull her daughter from the water, police said, and local medics responded to the scene and the children were medically cleared. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) explained that a Black man helped rescue the young girl from the attacker as more people gathered and witnessed what had happened. CAIR later confirmed that the children are now safe but severely traumatized. As Wolf was being handcuffed by police, she allegedly shouted to a witness who was with Mrs H, 'Tell her I will kill her, and I will kill her whole family,' the agency reported. Mrs. H also told CAIR that Wolf had allegedly snatched her hijab off her head and began beating and kicking her, preventing her from reaching her daughter as the suspect held her head underwater. In a statement, the distressed mother said: 'We are American citizens, originally from Palestine, and I don’t know where to go to feel safe with my kids. My country is facing a war, and we are facing that hate here. 'My daughter is traumatized; whenever I open the apartment door, she runs away and hides, telling me she is afraid the lady will come and immerse her head in the water again. 'Also, my husband’s employment is jeopardized due to having to leave work to accompany me and our four kids whenever we have appointments and errands to run.'

Thursday, September 5, 2024 - A 39-year-old woman and her 19-year-old son have been arrested for allegedly murdering her husband and then attempting to cover up the crime by claiming he was killed during a robbery at their home in Maubane village, near Makapanstad, North West. North West police spokesperson, Col Amanda Funani, confirmed the arrest of Refiloe Malekoa and her son, Goitsimang Madibela, on Monday, September 2. The pair have been charged with murder following the death of 63-year-old Lucas Molekoa. According to Funani, the incident occurred on Sunday, September 1, when Molekoa and his stepson, Goitsimang, were watching soccer on television. An argument reportedly broke out between the two, leading to a physical altercation. Refiloe attempted to intervene but failed to separate them. Realizing that her husband was overpowering her son, Refiloe allegedly struck Molekoa over the head with an object, causing him to collapse. Funani added that the mother and son then strangled Molekoa with a rope before rushing outside to inform their neighbours, claiming the family had been victims of a robbery. Police were called to the scene and initially took the two suspects in for questioning. After further investigation, they were charged with Molekoa's murder. The accused appeared in the Moretele Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, September 4, for a bail application, which was postponed. They remain in custody, with the bail hearing set to continue on Friday, September 6.

Thursday, September 5, 2024 - A Zimbabwean man, Bright Makuvatsine, has been sentenced to jail for theft after posing as a rescuer at an accident scene and stealing from the victims. Makuvatsine, a resident of Kuwadzana Extension, was convicted on charges of theft and unlawful possession of a firearm in the Harare Magistrate's Court. The incident took place on the evening of June 28, 2024, along Bulawayo Road near Sogo Service Station in Whitehouse, Harare. Makuvatsine was among the bystanders who gathered to assist a couple involved in a traffic accident. Under the guise of helping, he stole a satchel from the couple, which contained personal belongings, including a 9mm Sarsilmaz pistol. Makuvatsine's crime was uncovered on August 23, 2024, when he was found in possession of the stolen firearm at the Kuwadzana 6 shopping centre. After his arrest, he led police to recover some of the stolen items. The court sentenced Makuvatsine to 12 months in prison for theft, with four months suspended on the condition of good behaviour. Additionally, he was fined US$300 for unlawful possession of the firearm, with the failure to pay resulting in an additional four months imprisonment.

Thursday, September 5, 2024 - A pregnant woman suffered a miscarriage and lost her unborn child after being attacked by two schoolboys while waiting for a bus in Scotland. The woman is said to have gotten into an altercation with two teenagers in the High Street in Tranent, East Lothian at around 6.20pm last Friday. The teenagers pushed the pregnant woman off a bench and knocked her to the ground before running off. She was rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary by her husband the following afternoon after suffering from 'bleeding and severe and unbearable pain'. Her heartbroken husband wrote an appeal on social media following the incident to track down the teenagers. He later posted an update on Tuesday revealing that his wife suffered a miscarriage while in hospital. He wrote: 'I just want to update everyone about the condition of my wife. 'It is with a heavy heart to inform the community that my wife had a miscarriage, pregnancy loss and she is still in the hospital recuperating. 'This is a very traumatic, heartbreaking, and horrible experience for us, especially for my wife and kids. 'I am making an appeal to everyone, if you have sons and daughters, nieces [and] nephews, please have a word with them. 'Teach them and remind them every day how to respect people and behave in public places. Good manners should be taught and start at home.' People were shocked to read the post with one person responding: 'Sorry to hear this, hope they charge whoever did this to your wife and baby.' Another said: 'I'm so sorry for this devastating loss, I hope in time you get justice.' And another said: 'Oh my God, that's so terrible. I really hoped she would get better. Love to you all.' According to the social media appeal, the boys were high school students and were wearing black uniforms, with one in shorts and the other wearing trousers. The pregnant woman even offered them a seat and tried to be nice but the teenagers were 'rude'. After she was hurt, she got angry and told them she was pregnant. They 'said sorry and ran away', the social media post added. Writing on Saturday afternoon, the husband said: 'Just an update regarding my post last night, my wife is bleeding now and she is in severe and unbearable pain. 'We are waiting for the ambulance service. This is a call for justice.' Mike Falconer, chairperson for Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council, said: 'My absolute sincerest sympathies to them, this is absolutely awful. 'Thankfully things like this don't happen often. 'I hope they're able to trace the people responsible and they face up to what they've done.' A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'We received a report of an assault on High Street, Tranent, which happened on Friday, 30 August.'Enquiries are ongoing.'

The paperwork which appears to have been created by Los Angeles-based firm Full Scope, reveals a strategy to make their split, and says the date for an announcement is September 28. It also outlines a supposed plan to release an official statement at the end of this month'. It adds that the announcement will be 'gracious, respectful and stress mutual respect. Laying out what the statement would say, they write: 'Example: Travis and Taylor have decided to part ways after careful consideration. They both value and respect each other's personal lives and appreciate your respect for privacy during this time. 'They are both committed to their careers and personal growth. They remain friends and wish each other the best.' The paperwork also states that the announcement would focus on Mr Kelce's 'personal growth' by framing the breakup as a 'natural part of life.' It also will highlight his commitment to his career and his ongoing achievements in the sports industry.' They also plan to send it to major media outlets with a press release to ensure ‘broad coverage.’ However, a spokesman for Full Scope insisted that they were 'entirely false and fabricated and were not created, issued or authorised by this agency’. The representative also said they called a lawyer to look into the claims. 'We have engaged our legal team to initiate proceedings against the individuals or entities responsible for the unlawful and injurious forgery of documents,' they said.

Thursday, September 5, 2024 - The Mpumalanga Division of the High Court in South Africa on Tuesday sentenced a 51-year-old man, Josaya Ndlozi, to life imprisonment for the m8rder of his girlfriend, Sophie Phumzile Malele, after accusing her of cheating. The accused was automatically declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000. The court heard that the accused and the deceased were cohabiting in Lydenburg and had three children together. Before the incident, Malele had applied for an interim protection order against Ndlozi and one of the conditions was for the accused not to assault, threaten, or harass the deceased as their relationship was volatile. On the morning of 08 February 2023, the children were at school and an argument between the accused and the deceased ensued. It escalated and led the accused to stab Malele with a knife in her upper body and she fell. After realising that Malele was not moving, he informed one of his neighbours and the police. Malele was declared dead on the scene and the accused was arrested. Malele's cause of death was multiple sharp force injuries to the neck. In court, Ndlozi pleaded guilty to the crime and was subsequently convicted of premeditated murder. State Advocate Senzo Zindela asked the court to impose a suitable sentence. He stated that the accused pleaded guilty due to overwhelming evidence the state had against him which is not a sign of remorse. Before handing down the sentence, Acting Judge Manthata said the accused deprived the deceased of the constitutional right to life. As a result, three minor children were left without a mother. He stated that gender-based violence and femicide continue to be a pandemic that is ravaging our communities. He found no reasons justifying deviation from the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) expressed satisfaction with the sentence, emphasizing its unwavering commitment to prosecuting cases related to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and femicide. NPA stated that this case serves as a stark reminder of the need to protect vulnerable individuals in society and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.

Thursday, September 5, 2024 - Greta Thunberg has been arrested during a Palestine protest in Denmark. The Swedish climate activist, 21, joined an occupation of a University of Copenhagen building as students call for it to boycott Israeli universities. Sharing footage of police on her Instagram story, Thunberg said: "Police have been called, violently entered the building with a ram wearing assault rifles. "They are evicting everyone as we speak." Images show her with hands cuffed as police marched her into a van, shortly after 9am local time. Five other people were arrested after blocking the building, which three of them briefly entered, Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten reported. "I can’t confirm the names of those arrested, but six people have been arrested in connection with the demonstration," a police spokesperson said. "They are suspected of forcing their way into the building and blocking the entrance." Students against Occupation, the campaign group behind the protest, said: "While the situation in Palestine only gets worse, the University of Copenhagen continues cooperation with academic institutions in Israel. Friday, September 6, 2024 - Police officers based at Parklands police station have arrested a notorious motorbike-riding thug who was caught on camera snatching a phone from a man in Ngara. The victim was scrolling through his phone when the thug snatched it and sped off in a motorbike. The suspect had concealed his identity with a helmet and wore it like a boda boda rider. Luckily, the robbery incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed in a nearby building.
