Here's What Led To The First World War
According to documented history, events that led to the First World War can be traced to Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who was the then heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire, and he was shot and killed alongside his wife on June 28, 1924, by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist. At the time, Gavrilo Princip, alongside other nationalists, had the aim of ending the Austro-Hungarian control of the regions of Bosnia, Serbia, and Herzegovina. After he was assassinated, the Austro-Hungarian empire accuses the Serbian government of assassinating Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, as they also saw an opportunity to end the Serbian nationalism once and for all.In terms of alliance, the then powerful Russia was in support of the Serbian nationalists, while the Austro-Hungarian empire waited to ensure that Germany would give them their supper before they declared war on Serbia. This was because the Austro-Hungarian empire feared that with Russia backing Serbia, Russia’s allied countries such as France and maybe Great Britain would back Serbia. After about a week, the allied forces of Russia, Serbia, France, and Great Britain declared war on the allied forces of Austro-Hungarian forces and Germany, and this caused the First World War to escalate. The war witnessed so many battles and advancements by the German forces, who had a large military and soldiers, and they left death and destruction in anything and anyone that stood in their way. While all the battles such as the first battle of the Marne, the eastern front, and the Russian revolution were ongoing, the United States of America was neutral and only focused on selling equipments and ammunitions, as well as sending humanitarian aids to countries that needed them. However, the United States were dragged into the war when the German forces used their submarines to sink both military, cargo and civilian ships in the United States waters. On April 2nd, 1917, the then US president Woodrow Wilson declared war on Germany after the German submarine sunk about five US commercial ships. The war then went on till 1918, and in 1919, the leaders of the countries involved in the war decided to have a peace conference in Paris. The aim of the conference was not just to end the First World War but also to avoid future wars that would destabilize the people of the world. On June 28, 1919, a treaty known as the treaty of versatility was signed, and the League of Nations was also formed in 1920 to prevent more coming wars. However, one significant thing happened, Germany was not allowed to be part of the League of Nations, and this made Germany feel that they were tricked into signing the treaty to end the war.The prevention of Germany to be part of the League of Nations started nursing feelings of hatred and distrust. However, Germany was later allowed to become a part of the League of Nations in 1926, until later in 1933 when Adolf Hitler withdrew their membership. The First World War saw the death of about 9 million soldiers.>
